What a block explorer teaches about trust

Public ledgers make everything visible, but visibility and understanding are not the same thing.

A block explorer lets anyone look at a public ledger: every transaction, every address, every block. It is one of the most transparent tools on the internet.

Yet visibility and understanding are not the same thing, and the gap between them says a lot about trust.

Visible is not the same as legible

Everything on the ledger can be seen, but very little of it explains itself. Addresses are strings, transactions are numbers, and context has to come from somewhere else.

“Seeing everything is not the same as understanding anything.”

Adding context carefully

Good explorers add that context carefully: labelling known contracts, decoding what a transaction did, and making it clear what is verified and what is guessed. Each of those choices is an editorial one.

Where trust comes from

Transparency is a starting point. Trust comes from the tools and people who help us read what is in front of us, and from being honest about what they do not know.
